Size line reactor for groups of VFD’s for total load x 1.25. Round up. (1) line reactor can be used for the group. Reactors used on line side of a VFD provide noise reduction from the drive, and provide protection for the VFD from incoming power. Load side provide protection for the motor. Some VFD’s come with internal noise reduction, but this will not protect the VFD from some supply power anomalies. Size line reactor for the total amp draw of load x 1.25. Round up. (1) line reactor can be used for the group. VFD and Motor Protection Accessories: VFD(Variable Frequency Drives) are used instead of standard starters for various reasons. The most common being for speed control but others for larger motors providing cost savings and power savings for the customer and also provides benefits for consumption on the Power Co. supply side. A VFD can cause noise on the power system. To control the excess noise that could be harmful to other equipment on the electric system, (computers, PLC’s, telecom systems, and other VFD drives), filters can be used. If the electrical system is 10x the kva rating of the VFD, then filters are required. Some VFD have built in EMC (electromagnetic capability) filters. These will act the same as a line side filter, but they may not be large enough for the application, it is suggest to still provide a separate external line side filter for the best protection.
